He volunteered into the army and became General Grant's Military Secretary. He was also appointed by President Grant, as the first "Commissioner of Indian Affairs" on April 13, 1869.

Miller is the winner of the 2014 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest, with her acrylic painting of ruddy ducks. She is the third woman artist to have won the competition since it began in 1949.
