Department Overview

The Department of Economic Development, Planning & Tourism made advancements on a wide range of projects spanning a number of disciplines. Our work here at the Department serves a range of clientele including the County Legislature, local communities, businesses and residents of Cattaraugus County. Although the projects are very diverse in subject matter, we are guided by several key objectives:

· Smart Development for Quality Communities
· Business Retention & Expansion
· Business Attraction
· Foster Entrepreneurship
· Improvement of our Housing Stock
· Tourism Marketing & Promotion
· Transportation Systems Improvement
· Enhancement/Expansion of Recreational
  Trails/Facilities
 
In order to accomplish these goals we must start with our human resources. The staff of the Department is highly qualified, motivated and team-oriented. The staff consists of ten County employees and two Business Development Corporation (BDC) employees.

To accomplish these goals our staff utilizes a number of tools of the trade:

  • Development of Guidebooks
  • Continual Update & Enhancement of the County Website
  • Flyer & Brochure Development
  • Travel Guide Production
  • Targeted Mailings
  • Press Releases & Paid Advertising
  • Grant Writing
  • Creation of Maps & other Visual Aids utilizing GIS Software
  • Technical Assistance to Communities & Businesses
  • Seminars and Workshops
The Record of Decision from the Federal Highway Administration and New York State for the Route 219 Freeway Alternative was released on September 4, 2003.
So much of our work is based on the professional volunteerism of our boards, participation of municipal officials and careful oversight of our County Legislature and County Administration. I would also like to personally acknowledge the support that we receive from our state and federal elected representatives.
