Cattaraugus County represents its “Viewpoint on the Smart
Development for Quality Communities Strategy” in a variety of
forums, including the following:
1) Statewide Advisory Committee (2000 – 2001). Worked
successfully on the Advisory Committee to the Governor’s Task Force
on Quality Communities in Albany, which was co-chaired by Lt.
Governor Mary O. Donohue and Sandy Treadwell, former Secretary of
State, and spoke at APA, NYSAC and Intercounty Conferences,
representing rural county viewpoints. 2) Lake Erie Bi-National Forum (1998 – Present). Working with
the County Leadership, represents the Cattaraugus Creek watershed on
the Lake Erie Forum, which is part of the International Treaty
requirements that the U.S. and Canada clean up the Great Lakes. We
are encouraging USEPA and Environment Canada to offer technical
assistance to solve problems instead of new regulations and
penalties. Click here to download a copy.
3) Route 219 Development Committee (1996 – Present). (1) Working
with County leadership, supervises committee work and consultants in
developing economic development proposals related to highway
expansion, and (2) serves as a voting member of the Route 219
Development Committee, which reviews all matters related to the
proposed expansion of Route 219 through Cattaraugus County. In June
2002, the committee officially supported the freeway alternative
prior to state and federal comment deadlines. 4) Allegany State Parks Trails Work Group (2001 – Present).
Represents Cattaraugus County on the state park agency’s Work Group
for updating the trail network within the Allegany State Park. This
group is comprised of eighteen representatives from trail groups,
environmental and sports organizations, and local governments. A new
master plan for trails within the state park will be recommended by
this state work group by the end of 2003. The county’s role is to
respond to linkages between trails outside the park and inside the
park. 5) Other groups include: CC Water Quality Council, CC Resource
Conservation and Development Committee, CC Agricultural and Farmland
Protection Board, CC Housing Consortium.
