Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

The Department currently coordinates the efforts of over 800 volunteers age 55 and older in Cattaraugus County. Volunteers are placed in various non-profit agencies or organizations in the county including: Senior Wellness and Nutrition Program Sites, libraries, schools, hospitals, museums, entertainment, etc.

Volunteers can be reimbursed for mileage costs and are covered by various types of insurance.

The Cattaraugus County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has nominated two volunteers, Mary Martello and Betty Jean Greene, for the 2014 New York State Senior Citizen’s Award entitled, “Unleash the Power of Age.”  This award is to recognize older New Yorkers who have demonstrated the power of making a difference through civic engagement.  Each county has the opportunity to nominate two volunteers for this prestigious award.

A bold new dining trend is being unleashed in communities all across the U.S. “Let’s Have Dinner and Talk About Death” (LHD) launched in August 2013, and since that time health care professionals have been chomping at the bit to host their own macabre meals. Here in Cattaraugus County, the first such event is about to take place.

Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, announced today that as part of the 2014 March for Meals campaign, the department’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition (SWAN) program hosted Community Champions Day on Wednesday, March 19, at the nutrition sites located throughout Cattaraugus County. Formerly known as Mayors for Meals Day, Community Champions Day is a day when elected officials deliver Meals on Wheels along with the volunteers.

Moreover, falls prevention programs in many communities like ours are helping older adults to begin controlling falls risk by changing some daily habits and making simple modifications around the home.
