ICP MEETING

March 03, 2005

Location: Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES Olean

  1. Introductions

    Speaker
    Dr. Anthony Evans

Anthony Evans, Director of the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau, began the meeting with allowing everyone to introduce him or herself.

  2. ICP Reporting

At the end of the month, Tony will be going to Syracuse to meet with Larry Pasti, the ICP Guru. Together, the ICP members brainstormed why ICP is so good.

The reasons we came up with are:

    • Search Institute and CTC surveys- more longitude data, save money due to less duplication, good relations with schools, continue offering services, programming for students
    • Community Outreach- reach out and "educate" the community on youth development, "reach out to do more, better."
    • Instant Collaboration- saves time when educating other people at ICP
    • Mini-Grants- we would like to continue and make sure localities have money due to county funding being cut
    • Feed collaboration by spending the day together in trainings
    • Encourage innovation- BIG things, little resources
    • Training- Helps to strengthen Collaboration, keeps members up-to-date with training, lets members learn new ways of doing old tricks, when many ICP members go to trainings together, they have a unified philosophy.
  3. Axis 1-2-1

    Purpose of Youth Center

To provide opportunities for our church youth to have relationships with one another and with unbelieving friends, to reach out to these friends by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to minister to them by helping them grow in maturity in the faith, and in turn live godly lives

    Programming

We first opened for regular program on January 7, 2005. Currently open Friday nights 6-9:30 p.m. for recreational activities including pool, foosball, Ping-Pong, snack bar, and games. We will be expanding to Saturday nights with similar programming on 3/12/05 with one night for Jr. High and one for Sr. High. Other special activities are scheduled occasionally such as concerts, movies, etc. We are a faith-based organization, and while all activities do not consist of religious activities, all activities are undertaken with our purpose in mind.

    Those involved

Southern Tier Youth For Christ (hold deed, "corporate umbrella," employ director, training and expertise), Advisory Board (advise director, fundraising, help provide resources), Cattaraugus Ministers Association (initiated project, formed initial advisory board and hired first director, represented on the Advisory Board), Volunteers (assist in youth center operations, include teenagers and adults), and Director (oversees, ensures training of, and equips volunteers, makes decisions relative to the continuation of ministry, work with the advisory board).

    Facilities

Formally Grace Wesleyan Church. Includes sanctuary, snack bar with large dining area, recreation room, annex room, office, and 10'X30' room. Currently, we are working to complete repairs to one wing of building, which was damaged by water. The building is in need of additional repairs to improve its efficiency upgrading insulation, and windows. We would like to utilize the large lawn behind the building for volleyball, basketball, and a skate park. Electrical system is currently being updated and improved. Long term, our goal is to utilize all of our facilities to benefit not only youth, but also our entire community. Any number of groups may be able to benefit from the facility with programs that run while the building is not being used for youth activities. While we are committed to the continued growth and development of our youth ministry, we realize the tremendous opportunity to serve others in our community. The building is rented out to a local church for use on Sunday mornings.

    Funding

Our ministry is funded completely by the generosity of local residence, churches, and businesses. We are interested in exploring additional funding sources through grants.

    Miscellaneous

We are very interested in exploring the possibility of partnering with county agencies that may be interested in utilizing our facilities to provide services to residence of our area. This may be an opportunity to increase utilization, interest, and support for our project among community residence, while affording county agencies the efficiency of centralized point of accessibility to those residence in our area that might benefit from county services and resources they provide.

    SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE

We still have no word on the ACT II RFP, and so we continue to look as sustainability without additional funding. We have made a great deal of progress; three of the four ACT schools have indicated that they will continue to offer use of their space. We also have two new resources - the Salamanca Youth Bureau is also offering use of their space in the evening, as is Axis 1-2-1. We are exploring ways of documenting existing youth development opportunities in the County, United Way's 211 system looks like our most viable option at this time. If your agency has not submitted its information to United Way, please do so. Cornell University is developing pre-packaged outreach materials for use at each of the ACT sites. When available, we will be using this material to train a "speakers bureau" who will them be able to offer YD training to interested service providers and community groups. Cornell has also indicated that, should they receive additional funding, their Center of Excellence will remain a resource to ACT communities regardless of whether those ACT communities receive additional funding. The mini-grant committee is working on applying for funds, and CCA is also pursuing additional YD funds from the Overbook and Tommy Hilfiger Foundations.

    ACT BUDGET MODIFICATION

We still await word on whether our request has been approved. If approved, ACT will be able to grant a few additional mini-grants. We will announce the availability of those funds.

    ASSESSING YOUR ORGANIZATIONS READINESS

As stated during the Feb. meeting, ACT must assess the extent to which our partner organizations have adopted youth development principles. Last grant year, we asked partners to complete a survey, and we are asking the same this year. If you have not already done so, please help us out by completing a survey.

    HELLO OUT THERE

As mentioned, the ACT Youth Engagement committee is trying to document existing YD activities. We are well aware that the information we gather is limited to who comes to a particular ICP meeting. We also know that individuals in this room have knowledge of both their programs, and the communities in which they, so we would like to ask the group to help us get a sense of what activities are out there by completing an exercise

NEXT MEETING: April 7th, 2005 at the Ellicottville Family Support Center Meeting starts at 1:00 p.m.
